Educational Objectives

Providing broad perspectives and profound scholarship, our teaching is intended to foster a humane attitude, while enabling students to accumulate advanced skills and knowledge to carry out nursing research or to acquire the high level of expertise they need as nursing professionals.

Diploma Policy

To qualify for award of a master’s degree in nursing, students must attend the master’s program in the graduate school for the prescribed period, acquire the prescribed number of course units, pass the thesis examination, and also be judged to meet the requirements listed below.
1. Is capable of applying a broad perspective to address various practical challenges during on-site nursing. 2. While standing up for human dignity and human rights, is capable of finding ethical solutions to problems. 3. Has the basic ability to carry out research.
4. Is able to actively carry out role as a professional nurse in collaboration with other professionals in
health care and welfare systems.
In addition to items 1-4, candidates for higher-level specialist credentials must also be judged to meet requirements 5 and 6.
5. Has highly competent clinical nursing capabilities in a specialized field of nursing. 6. Is able both to manage current systems and to construct and manage new systems.
In addition to items 1-4, candidates for research and education credentials must also be judged to meet requirements 7 and 8.
7. Is capable of organizing knowledge in specialized fields of nursing.
8. Has basic ability to carry out research that contributes to the development of nursing and to use
this as a basis for teaching.

Curriculum Policy

Two specializations: Nursing and International Health Care and Midwifery. Each course has its own curriculum. To meet current and future challenges, each course actively encourages improvement of practical skills and the development of research ability. The basic philosophy of training is to develop human resources for the future, people who can demonstrate international and interdisciplinary capabilities for leadership, administration, education, and research. To achieve these educational goals, the Nursing and International Health Care and Midwifery courses have been organized into subjects according to the policies below:
1. Studies are to include compulsory common course units of which learning is required across major
subjects.
2. Common subjects is given for training in research skills.
3. The humanitarian basis of the Red Cross and its international viewpoint is to be taught in common
class:
Teaching in the Nursing master’s program has been further organized into subjects according to the policies below:
1. Classes (special lectures, laboratory training and field practice) are provided for ten specialist areas (Nursing Science & Philosophy, Cancer Nursing, Child and Family Health Nursing, Adult Health Nursing, Gerontological Nursing, Psychiatric Mental Health Nursing, Community Health Nursing, Nursing Education, Nursing Management, International and Disaster Nursing)
2. Classes necessary in preparation for the Certified Nurse Specialist exam are provided (CNS course:
Cancer Nursing, Child Health Nursing, Critical Care Nursing, Chronic Care Nursing, Psychiatric Mental Health Nursing, Gerontological Nursing, Home Care Nursing, Disaster Nursing).
3. Classes required to train nursing professionals to a high level of expertise are provided, including preparation for the Certified Nurse Administrator exam, and qualifications for full-time teaching or curriculum coordinator posts.
Teaching in the Master’s Program in International Healthcare and Midwifery has been further organized according to the policies below.
1. Classes necessary for specialist areas are provided (special lectures, laboratory training and field
practice).
2. Classes required for taking the national midwife certification exam are provided.

Admission Policy

1. A person able to apply knowledge gained from experience into logical thinking.
2. A person, while holding their own opinions, having the flexibility of mind to listen to the opinions
of others.
3. A person able to pursue topics while becoming more deeply aware of potential problems.
4. A person having an interest in social affairs and the ability to see, and think about things with an
international viewpoint.
5. A person willing to seriously face ethical issues and work towards their resolution.

Masterʼs Program in Nursing

Researcher’s Course covers the following 10 areas: Nursing Science & Philosophy, Cancer Nursing, Child and Family Health Nursing, Adult Health Nursing, Gerontological Nursing, Psychiatric Mental Health Nursing, Community Health Nursing, Nursing Education, Nursing Management, International and Disaster Nursing.
A master’s degree (science in Nursing) can be obtained after having enrolled in the program for at least 2 years, acquired at least 30 credits in the given subjects, received a necessary research guidance, and then passed the final examination and the examination of master’s thesis.
In the lectures (special lectures), students are required to review (evaluate & examine) the literature of nursing and other disciplines and make presentations.
Our seminars and practices help students to develop specialized practical abilities under the guidance of the instructor (supervision).
This course cultivates a wide perspective of humanity, high clinical abilities and research perspectives that are essential in a specialized nursing profession.

Certified Nurse Specialist course (CNS)
The areas of this couse, Cancer Nursing, Child and Family Health Nursing, Adult Health Nursing, Gerontological Nursing, Psychiatric and Mental Health Nursing, Community Health Nursing, International and Disaster Nursing fields are certified as the following 8 Certified Nurse Specialist programs by Japan Association of Nursing Programs in Universities: “Cancer nursing”, “Child Health Nursing”, “Chronic Care Nursing”, “Critical Care Nursing”, “Gerontological Nursing”, “Psychiatric Mental Health Nursing”, “Home Care Nursing”, “Disaster Nursing”.
A master’s degree holder, who has a Japanese nursing license, has acquired predetermined credits in the specialized nursing fields with a total experience of at least 5 years in actual training (at least 3 years in the specialized nursing field) can apply to Japanese Nursing Association for a Certified Nurse Specialis in the desired field.

Practice Nursing Course
In the two areas of Nursing Education and Nursing Management, “Career Support Program for Teachers of Nursing”, “Career Support Program for Administrative Nurses” and “Career Support Program for In-service Training Personnel” of Practice Course are offered for developing teaching staff of nursing and administrative nurses.
A person who has completed the Nursing Management area and has at least 3 years of actual working experience after completing the master’s program, or a person who has at least 3 years of managerial experience in the position. equivalent to or above the Head Nurse is entitled to appear for the administrative nurse certification examination conducted by Japanese Nursing Association in Universities.

Master's Program in International Health Care and Midwifery

At the time of taking admission, select “Researcher’s Course” or “Practical Course”.
Researcher’s Course develops human resources who have the ability to observe global situations, have a research perspective and are capable of providing guidance.
Practical Course enables students to take Japan’s national midwifery examination after learning the advanced midwifery care and acquired the predetermined credits.
A master’s degree (science in nursing) can be obtained after having enrolled in the course for at least 2 years, acquired predetermined credits in the given subjects, received a necessary research guidance, and then passed the examination of a master’s thesis or a guided research and the final examination.
The goal is to make international contribution through midwifery, where scientific and ethical evidences and skills are created to ensure a women’s health and safety;
And to learn Red Cross activities under the international humanitarian law, learn midewifery based on global standards, and the theory and practices of women’s health, and contribute to the improvement of the quality of midwifery care.

About Common Subjects
In addition to the area-wise specialized subjects, the master’s program provides subjects common to all fields. These common subjects are as follows: “Comprehensive lectures on human beings”, “Introduction to the Red Cross II”, “Nursing Science” and “Consultation in Nursing”.
Among these, “Comprehensive lectures on human beings” provides a curriculum unique to our college that is offered in terms of the importance of liberal arts in the advanced education of nursing.
